FAKC President's Message
May 2010
The 2010 Florida legislative session has ended. Due to the diligent work of FAKC, NAIA, Mixon & Associates, other allies with common interests and the dog community, we were able to prevent several bills from becoming law. Sen. Hill has vowed to bring BSL back next year.
We have not fared well on the local level. It is imperative and essential that everyone monitors what is going on in their county and municipalities in those counties. You should check for workshops and agenda hearings at least once weekly for county and city government. Usually, by the time it hits the newspaper or evening news, it’s too late for us to change the intent or direction of the proposed changes or additions to current law or code. It is also of utmost importance the dog club members, owners or breeders be in attendance at the workshops and hearings. If you are a constituent it is especially important as your voice carries more weight.
It is impossible for me or Diane (NAIA Trust of FL) to know everything that is going on around the state. It is everyone’s responsibility to be vigilant for your territory and inform us. We would rather receive the same information several times than not at all. We cannot effectively respond when we receive information the day of or day before a hearing – IT IS TOO LATE TO BE EFFECTIVE!!
Please make sure that secretary, Elizabeth Page (sioned@digital.net) has current information for your club delegate and/or legislative person. It’s not a time consuming task, just a simple email. Having correct contact information makes a big difference. Rod Russell does a terrific job with the web site (www.fakc.org) and keeps us informed. If you have information to share about your club, please send it to him as the webmaster.
Please send me (Mikahkid2@aol.com) information about when and where your club meetings are held. Leah and I are working on a project.
Blessings until we meet again,
Susan
